The Leg Abductor – Foot to Knee can be used when sitting in a chair or lying in bed. It is useful for patients who are contracting and crossing their legs. It is also used to abduct the legs after a broken tip of femur or after a hip operation.
It is made from a very hard foam cut into a wedge shape. They are similar but a lot smaller than our Leg Abductor – Large (sold separately), that is used after a total hip replacement operation.
We use a water-resistant nylon cover, as it is less likely to cause sweating than a vinyl cover. Before fitting the nylon cover, we place the foam in a polythene bag to give it added protection. The cover has soft cotton webbing with Hook & Loop Tape fasteners to secure the Abductor to the legs. With some patients who have very delicate skin, consider putting some combine padding around the legs to protect them. Monitor the patient’s skin for pressure sores, particularly around the inside of the knees.
Remember that some patients may get cramp if they sit for long periods and cannot move their legs. Refer to their care plan regarding ambulation. Consider using a Chair Belt (sold separately) to remind the patient not to stand up when the Leg Abductor is in use.

Examples of a suitable person who is able to sign the letter are: Occupational Therapist; Physiotherapist; Clinical Nurse Manager; Registered Nurse; Doctor; or another suitably qualified person.
